Hurricane Electric’s IPv6 Evangelist Owen DeLong to Discuss IPv6 at HostingCon 2010

Categories: Web Hosting News

Hurricane Electric, the world’s leading IPv6-native Internet backbone and colocation provider, today announced that its IPv6 Evangelist,  Owen DeLong, will discuss IPv6 transition at HostingCon 2010, the premier conference and trade show for the hosted services industry. The show will take place July 19-21 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. On Wednesday, July 21st, Owen DeLong will participate in a presentation entitled “Preparing for IPv6 Deployment.” Owen will join John Curran, President and CEO, American Registry of Internet Numbers, to discuss how network operators should strategically plan and implement IPv6 migration.  The discussion will include guidance on how corporate IT departments can migrate to a dual v4/v6 stack, with information on configuring DNS, web and e-mail servers, and DHCP/SLAAC.

“I plan to tell attendees how to gain an advantage over their competitors by beginning their IPv6 transition now,” said Owen DeLong, Hurricane Electric’s IPv6 Evangelist. “If done properly, IPv6 transition can be a relatively painless process and yield a number of advantages, such as simplified network configuration and IT service extensibility.”

Hurricane Electric first deployed IPv6 on its global backbone in 2001. This backbone is one of the few that is IPv6-native and does not rely on internal tunnels for its IPv6 connectivity. IPv6 is offered as a core service and every customer is provided IPv6 connectivity, as well as classic IPv4 connectivity.

Last November, Hurricane Electric announced that its IPv6 network had doubled in less than a year to more than 600 associated IPv6 backbones.  As of today, Hurricane Electric has further increased its count of associated IPv6 backbones to more than 830.

In addition to offering enterprises free IPv6 certification, last year Hurricane Electric released an IPv4 depletion Application for the iPhone and Google Android platform plus additional tools to educate CIOs and network administrators about the urgency of this transition.

About Hurricane Electric
Hurricane Electric is a leading Internet Backbone and Colocation Provider. Hurricane Electric operates its own global IPv4 and IPv6 network and owns several data centers in Fremont, California, running multiple N-by-10 Gbps links throughout North America, Europe and Asia.  Founded by Mike Leber in his garage in 1994, Hurricane Electric now operates the largest IPv6 Internet Backbone in the world as measured by the number of networks connected.

Cloud Linux Inc. Releases SecureLVE

Categories: Web Hosting News

Cloud Linux Inc., a software company dedicated to serving the needs of hosting service providers, today announced the release of SecureLVE, an extension of its Lightweight Virtual Environment technology which creates a higher level of security for shared hosting servers. The company avers that SecureLVE provides a virtualized file system, which separates each user on the server into its own virtual environment, preventing one user from seeing any other users on the server. It claims that this new server security makes it difficult for hackers to attack, deface, or steal data from the shared web server.

The company states that SecureLVE is based on its Lightweight Virtual Environment technology, which allows the administrator to control CPU usage on a server at the tenant or application level. Providing a security layer that limits the available applications, devices, and what a user can see in the file system, SecureLVE technology makes it harder for an attacker to penetrate the server.

It articulates that on a typical shared server, one user can often see other users on the system, as well as in some cases, their configuration files, including passwords. By compartmentalizing each user in its own environment and limiting the commands that each user can execute, the vector of attacks against the server is significantly diminished and server’s overall security is enhanced. With SecureLVE, many attacks that can happen on the server are completely prevented.

The company further states that the release of this new innovative security tool is further demonstration of its promise to help service providers increase security, stability and control of the server environment for more efficient and profitable operations. It invented the Lightweight Virtual Environment, a kernel-level technology that limits the amount of resources (CPU, I/O, memory) available to a specific process or customer. LVE isolates specific hardware resources in a lightweight environment and prevents one tenant on a shared server from affecting others, especially due to a sudden peak load from a single tenant.

It explains that SecureLVE provides the system administrator with functionality similar to container based virtualization, but on the application level, instead of the OS level. It will fill the gap between shared hosting and Virtual Private Servers (VPS), and will allow server administrators to increase server stability and density while greatly improving the security of shared hosting. Server owners can continue to limit available applications and limit accessible devices but without the performance monitoring and server management required for container based virtualization. The company adds that the software is available to all its subscribers.

“SecureLVE is the first out-of-the-box solution that delivers a high level of security in a shared hosting environment,” states Igor Seletskiy, Cloud Linux Inc. Founder and CEO. “At Cloud Linux we will continue to deliver tools that improve the stability and security of the hosting environment, and give hosting providers the control and flexibility they need to manage the more complex challenges brought on with the rise of cloud computing.”
